Protecting LGBT Rights

I’m proud to have stood for LGBT rights, and rights for all gender and sexual minorities, throughout my career as representative and Attorney General.

Most recently, I testified in favor of LD 912, which would ban conversion ‘therapy’ — a pseudoscientific process premised on the repugnant idea that being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is a disease that must be ‘cured.’ This barbaric practice has been proven to place LGBT children and teenagers at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide.

As Governor, I will make sure LGBT people in Maine hear from their political leaders that they are respected and valued. And I will do everything in my power to:

  • End the practice of conversion therapy for good
  • Add gender identity to Maine’s hate crimes statute
  • Expand access to trans-inclusive healthcare
  • Improve services for LGBT children and teens, including addressing homelessness and the need for affordable, accessible, and knowledgable mental health services
  • Protect and fully implement our laws on adoption, non-discrimination, and right to change legal gender
