AUGUSTA – The Maine Credit Union League today endorsed Governor Janet Mills for reelection, citing her steady and inclusive leadership and her work to strengthen Maine’s economy and fight hunger. The League’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve her endorsement at a special meeting held earlier this month. In 2018, the League endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Shawn Moody.
“Governor Mills is an experienced leader who has successfully navigated our state through extraordinary times,” said Todd Mason, President/CEO of the Maine Credit Union League. “Her work to strengthen Maine’s economy and address critical issues like ending hunger are just a few reasons why she is deeply deserving of the credit union endorsement. She values our collective voice and has provided us a seat at the table when making key policy decisions. As an industry, we are fortunate that she recognizes the meaningful contributions credit unions make in the lives of their members, communities, and the State of Maine.”
“As Governor, I have fought for credit unions because I know they are cornerstones of Maine communities, with their friendly and trusted employees delivering vitally important services that Maine people and small businesses rely on every day,” said Governor Janet Mills. “I am proud to earn their support, and I pledge to continue fighting to ensure that Maine’s credit unions are strong because, when they are strong, so are people and small businesses across Maine.”
Under Governor Mills’ leadership, Maine handled the pandemic better than nearly every state in the nation, with one of the highest vaccination rates and one of the lowest death rates. Maine has also made a strong economic comeback, driving unemployment down to 3.1 percent and recovering 99 percent of the jobs lost during the pandemic. Under the Governor, Maine’s economic growth has been the 11th best in the nation. The Governor also brought together Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to pass one of the strongest inflation relief measures in the country, sending $850 relief checks – $170o total for the average Maine family – to most Maine people.
In 2019, Governor Mills and the State Legislature committed Maine to ending hunger by 2030 and charged the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry with developing a plan to accomplish that goal. Under Governor Mills, Maine is also providing free meals to all students in Maine public schools — the second state in the nation to do so.
In addition to the Credit Union League, Governor Mills has been endorsed by the Maine AFL-CIO, the Maine Education Association, Maine Service Employees Association, Planned Parenthood, Defend Our Health, EqualityMaine, and others.
